Blissful Bites

The 'babe' has just whipped up something in the kitchen! I have thought of selling some pastries to enjoy my summer because I will be going to Hong Kong Disneyland by the end of May. Of course, I need to save up for my food adventures there - a long-awaited fantasy to be fulfilled. So what's from the babe's kitchen?

Red Velvet Mini Cupcakes! With cream cheese frosting....
And topped with toasted cashew nuts!
box of 6 - P80
my little assistant: Joanna! :)
I'm giving some to a friend for her birthday. :)
Box of 6 - P80
A dozen - P160

At these affordable prices, they're perfect as gifts for special occasions or even as occasional indulgence. I intentionally made them at this size as a healthier serving compared to eating the regular size which you're forced to finish even when you've had enough. So if these are your guilty pleasures, just eat one everyday and your craving is satiated. :)

For orders (Cebu only), call or text +63 922 8822 655.
Orders should be made 3 days ahead.
Pick up is at Ayala, City Sports Club and IT Park.
Wholesale or party orders also accepted.

Tea & Symphony

With milk teas leading the food trend in Cebu, here's one called Tea & Symphony that just launched this month. It is located at the ground floor of UC Banilad. This is quite convenient for me compared to Cobo because it's along my route to school.
I was invited to the launching but I missed it so I dropped by one day with my friend , Chin-Chin, on our way to school. We were greeted by a cozy, clean and simple interior; perfect for study groups, small meetings, or even alone time. Picture frames of tea farmers at a tea leaf farm line the walls and they also have a spot where you can leave traces of your visit on a message board.
the message board. leave a note! :)
the menu board
They serve freshly brewed teas, milk teas, fruit teas and non-tea beverages with a variety of toppings to pair. Aloe Vera, Grass Jelly and Egg Pudding toppings are a must try! You can have their brewed teas and milk teas either hot or cold in small, medium or large serving. They also offer Taiwanese street food snacks! Choices are Chicken, Fish and Tofu in either Salt n Pepper or Wasabi Pepper. Being the more adventurous diner, I got wasabi pepper fish. Sweetness level is offered in Normal (100%), Less (75%), Half (50%), Mild (25%) and Healthy (0%). Chin-Chin tried their house blend, Tea & Symphony milk tea in normal sweetness, and I got their Panda milk tea (Tea & Symphony + black and white pearls), one of their mash up drinks, in 75% sweetness.
pretty Chin-Chin! :)

Fish in Wasabi Pepper
I found the fish quite salty but I loved the fried basil they included in the serving. The wasabi pepper was also just mild. My Panda milk tea was a bit too sweet to my taste so I think 50% sweetness would have been better.

I visited this place again last week with Doyzkie of iluvcebu.com and his friends JP and Javier. We had Tea & Symphony, Black Dragon, Wintermelon, Hokkaido and Panda milk teas (all at 50% sweetness), Apple Double Fruit Tea (Apple Green Tea + Green Apple Nata) and all three of their snacks - Chicken (in Salt n Pepper), Fish and Tofu (both in Wasabi Pepper). Only the Apple Double did not fit in the liking of our taste buds but everything else was really good. I particularly loved the Black Dragon with Aloe Vera Nata and the Tofu in Wasabi Pepper! :)

Tea & Symphony must have been named so because of the harmony of their teas and the pleasant music played in the cafe. They play acoustic, bossa nova and some blues at a pleasing audio level. The place is also very kempt and their teas are freshly brewed as you order! Definitely a place for you to cool down and relax without the guilt (if you're enemies with fat/cholesterol). ;)

New Old

I'm not a regular at Harbour City Dimsum restaurant and for some reason, I never order dessert when I dine there (not that I don't like dessert. I guess "Chinese" dessert just doesn't appeal to me.). Harbour City has been around since my childhood days but it was only tonight, thanks to my friend Luis Quibranza III, that I discovered an interesting dessert I'd mostly likely include to my regular line of orders whenever I dine there from here on.

So this here is called an ice cream roll. It's P55 and comes in choices of vanilla or chocolate ice cream. It's basically ice cream engulfed by a swiss roll or sponge roll. Quite crafty I'd say. I've never seen anything like this anywhere else yet. I personally like the plain swiss roll with chocolate ice cream. :)

So why "New Old", you wonder? It's a new find in an old place. Well, for me at least. :)

Harbour City Dimsum is located at 3rd floor, Ayala Center Cebu, beside Balletcenter.

What's in Season: Star Apple!

So I'm adding a new segment to my blog: What's in Season? It basically features fruits that are in season and sold abundantly along the streets and at the markets. Hope you guys find this useful and entertaining! :)

What's in Season: STAR APPLE (a.k.a. caimito)

There are two varieties that I know of - green and purple. The green ones stay the same color whether raw or ripe. You'll know they're ripe when they're soft to the touch. Purple ones, on the other hand, are green when raw and turn dark purple when ripe. They have a milky, soft texture and mild sweetness with seeds engulfed in the succulent membranous meat. They do not need to be peeled; just open by removing stem and pinching ad pulling laterally in half. As with all fruits, best eaten chilled. Watch out for the seeds though. :)

These in the pictures are the extra large variety, initially priced at P200 for a dozen but Dad's awesome haggling skills got them for P150. Buying them on the streets gives you more chances of haggling so as much as possible, take advantage of street vendors. :)

Cebu Secret Chows: A Perfect Ten Dining Experience

It's been too long since I've posted about a secret food spot. I've been caught up with school and budget's been pretty tight but I finally got to visit one this month. What a relief!

It was my dearest classmate's birthday on March 7. Chin-Chin is now 17 and I admit, I tend to forget her age because she's so mature! I feel like she's my age or is it the other way around? Haha. Just kidding.

We planned to have lunch at J Center to grab some Cobo but it was too much of a hassle to get there because we came from the south campus. It would have to take 3 jeepney rides for us to get there and we were already pretty hungry. She decided to treat me to 10 Dove St. instead.

10 Dove St. is located at Sto. Nino Village, Banilad. I've heard of this home-based restaurant years ago but I've never gotten to visit it 'til that day. I've only eaten their ube cake which my mom orders occasionally.

Chin-Chin with their selection of their home-made cakes
cute menage (salt and pepper holders)!
Finally having dined there thanks to Chin-Chin, the place was definitely a hidden treasure. It reminded me of the intimate setting at Cul de Sac down Maya St. But of course, this dainty little resto was special in its own way. They specialize in gourmet sandwiches which they offer with a choice of wheat or regular bread.

Like Cul de Sac, they have a set menu which consists of a soup, salad, sandwich and cake for only P 190. Great deal if you ask me! The menu was an interesting read. It was only there that I've encountered a wide variety of sandwiches meant as main dish and I did struggle a bit with my selections because I wanted to try so many of the choices. Anyway, I ended up with:

Soup: Brocolli and Cheese

I've always been a fan of broccolli since I was younger hence the selection. Since it came with cheese, I was kinda expecting it to be slightly thick and elastic but unfortunately, my expectations were not met. I was disappointed when I found that the brocolli wasn't so fresh because the flowers were brownish. I had to season my soup a bit as dictated by my palate but there was a bit of a surprise when I discovered bits of extra miniature parmesan croutons as I dug down the soup.

Salad: Harvest Apple

chunky apple slices, black grapes, toasted whole walnuts, marshmallows and dried dates in light mayo
This actually just gave me the impression of a waldorf salad with marshmallows. I've heard of marshmallows in salads before but this was the first time I've tasted it. I'm not sure if it really suits my palate but it does add to the sweetness and texture of the salad. I also loved the combination of toasted walnuts and apples. And the natural sweetness of the grapes and dried dates melded well to complete the salad.

Sandwich: Poseidon's Quest

They're plating.
My plating. Hehe. :D
my real good fat ass sandwich! <3
The highlight of the meal, one of their glorious sandwiches. I was feeling health-conscious that day so I opted for just a fish sandwich (wheat, of course). I was so glad they didn't use cream dory. It was breaded lamon-lamon (parrot fish) fillet, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and cucumber with dill mayo dressing.

Though it was just one layer, it was very filling and satisfying. The fish was cooked perfectly, tender and juicy on the inside. Chin-Chin and I switched half of our sandwiches to get a taste of both.

Dessert: Chocolate Decadence

This, I was excited for. Dessert is always my favorite part of a meal. I wanted to try their carrot cake but this got the better of me. Irresistible. Dark chocolate ganache, moist and soft cake, with a luscious velvety filling. Double sinful!

As for Chin-Chin's choices....

Soup: Clam Chowder

I found that our soups were of the same broth or base but hers was tastier because of the natural juices of the clam meat.

Salad: Fandango

w/ a raspberry vinaigrette
iceberg lettuce, parmesan croutons, mandarin oranges, cheese and toasted walnuts
This is one of their top selling salads but the vinaigrette was too thick. I think it was just raspberry jam added with a little oil and water; nothing special.

Sandwich: Roast Beef

This is just as good as a burger -- strips of beef tenderloin, sauteed onions and cheddar cheese. Really heavy. With the set meal, this is ultimately worth it. I loved this, too. Chin-Chin and I struggled to finish our meals because it was really heavy.

Dessert: Mango Avocado Cake

And of course, the perfect match to that heavy sandwich is a light fruity chiffon cake. This was really good; light yet flavorful enough and more than satisfactory. Mango and avocado are a perfect combination aside from the lovely color contrast; a teaser for the eyes and palate.

Coincidentally, 10 Dove has just turned 10 years old early this year and i'm sure it has left nostalgic marks on diners and still continues to. They are usually busy on weekends, both during lunch and dinner. This is a perfect place for a date away from the hustle and bustle of the city and even for meetings or an intimate party.

Thirsty?

On a random afternoon, I got quite a surprise from a message I received from the marketing head of Thirsty, Ms. Pia Mercado. She was inviting me to a press con for their new products but unfortunately, since I've been having problems with my laptop, I was only able to read the message after the date of the event. Sad! But she was really kind to contact me when I gave her my mobile number to give me some gift certificates to try their new products. This was the first time I'd receive something for my blog!

So, I got 5 coupons to try their Fresh Fruit Salad w/ Nestle Yogurt. I've actually already tried this and even the one with cream before. It's always been my favorite snack (Fresh FRUITS are my happiness!). Now that it comes with Nestle yogurt and more varieties of fruits, it's even more loveable! The fresh fruit salad is now made healthier and tastier with mango, watermelon, apple, grapes, lychee, sweet corn, buko (young coconut strips) and banana and a dollop of Nestle yogurt for only P65 (small), P80 (regular) and P90 (large). The small size is perfect for a solo serving and the regular size is already generous which makes the large size good to share.
And, they had a photo contest for a chance to win a Blackberry phone which runs from February 29, 2012 to April 11, 2012. The mechanics were to just take a photo of you or with friends enjoying the fruit salad with yogurt and email it to pagesholdings@yahoo.com. I really wanted to join this and I even made an effort to do a photo shoot just for this because I badly need a new phone right now and Blackberry would've been perfect for my blog and tweets BUT I missed the deadline of submission of entries! So much for my efforts. The deadline was on March 9 and I did the shoot on March 13. Oh well. :(
Here are the top picks for my supposed entries:

Yes, I'm FAT now. :|
Quick shoutout: Thank you so much Chene Denisse Wayne Echavez for proposing this shoot for me and being the muse. And thanks much to Joy Real for the great shots! :D

I mean c'mon, don't you think I deserve a blackberry for this? :(

They also have a contest for tweeties to win an iPod shuffle. There are three draws for this - March 14, March 28 and April 4. So, if you've got a Twitter account and wanna win an iPod shuffle, just follow @ThirstyFresh and retweet "@ThirstyFresh I love THIRSTY's fresh fruit salad with nestle yogurt! #032contest". There are still two more draws so go grab your chance!

Summer is finally here and Thirsty has two new shakes to cool you down for the season - Mojo and Rasta; additions to their existing Tropical Rain shake. The concoctions are still a secret though. Definitely something to look forward to in the heat!

Aside from these, if you haven't noticed, Thirsty now offers yogurt with their shakes WITHOUT added cost. And not just any yogurt (like those commercial powdered ones) but Nestle yogurt so it's reliable. Yogurt shakes made with fresh fruits and at very affordable prices! I'd love to try their guyabano shake now in season.

Meet the heat this summer the healthy way - with Thirsty! :D
