Load Up on Goodness at Arla Goodness Station at SM Aura

The holiday binging is over. It’s time for us to get real with our new year’s health and fitness resolutions.

As a licensed nutritionist,  I always tell my clients, it’s neither just about diet or exercise, it’s both. You can’t just exercise more than you eat, to achieve your fitness goals, because you simply can’t outrun a bad diet. What we put into our bodies will actually leave a lasting mark in our bodies more than we think.

I’m glad more and more healthy concept stores and restaurants are opening up in Manila and even in Cebu. Having been here in Manila for 6 months now, I can say it’s much easier to live a healthy lifestyle here than in Cebu, in the sense that a lot of healthy concept stores with certified organic products are available. You’re bound to find at least one in your neighborhood. This is a sign that there is a growing awareness and demand for all natural, organic food. And my dream would be for this real kind of food to someday be affordable and easily accessible for most.

Fortunately, more brands and companies are learning to believe in the same idea, that real food should be available for everyone. And Arla is one of them.

If you’re not familiar with Arla Foods, it is an international dairy company owned by 12,700 dairy farmers form Denmark, Sweden, the UK, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Well-known brands like Arla, Cocio, Lurpak and Castello belong to the Arla family. It is also the world’s largest manufacturer of organic dairy products.

We know how eating healthy can be quite a challenge when at the malls, and not to mention, expensive.

Arla has recently installed a pop-up cafe at SM Aura—the Arla Goodness Station

The Arla Goodness Station serves a 3-course set meal of freshly made soup, a bowl of succulent salad, and a hearty sandwich that will definitely fill you up with goodness while being good to your wallet, too. The sets range from P250-350.

With everything made from scratch and all-natural ingredients, you’ll even learn about how to #LetInTheGoodness in your own home everyday. The dishes feature the different varieties of Arla cheeses and the station will also be serving up tidbits of information on how to eat “clean” at home.

You can choose from 3 set combos or you can also mix and match to create your own set:

Set A:  P250
Soup: Roasted Tomato Soup
Salad: Greek Salad
Sandwich: Three Cheese Panini

This classic combo of grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup is made more nutritious with a serving of the refreshing Greek Salad.

I love how the salad is made from marinated cucumber strips and features Apetina feta cheese. This is my choice of feta cheese when I purchase from the grocery.

Interestingly, the soup is also topped with Arla cheesy spread which adds to the richness of the soup.

The cheese sandwich was a tasty indulgence in Arla’s Mozarella, Gouda and sharp Cheddar. Oh so good!

Set B:   P300
Soup: Brown Rice and Caramelized Mushroom
Salad: Garden Salad with Seasonal Fruit
Sandwich: All Natural PB&J

The brown rice and caramelized mushroom soup actually took me by surprise and I’d have to say it was my favorite among everything. The play of textures from the rice were so interesting and the depth of flavors from the mushroom were definitely a winning match.

Fruits, are always welcome in my salads, thank you!

And boy, is this is one jam-packed sandwich. The Arla cheesy spread balances the richness and richness of this sandwich. Definitely a kid’s favorite.

Set C:  P350
Soup: Chili Con Carne
Salad: Caprese
Sandwich: Corned Beef Sandwich

The chili con carne was a nice, hefty heartwarming soup. And I’m not normally a chili bean soup fan but this was actually pleasant, with spices all toned down to the right mildness and topped off with some nice gooey cheddar cheese.

Before you call out the corned beef sandwich, this is definitely not chucked out of the can. This sandwich uses only real and authentic corned beef made from scratch. The flavorful and tender meat is paired with Arla’s Emmental cheese and some tangy horseradish cream.

If you ask me, the Arla Goodness Station is a perfect lunch stop for when you need something light yet substantial, quick and most importantly, nutritious. You just know it’s good for you.

The salads are tasty and fresh, the soups hearty, and the sandwiches are more filling than they look! Nutritious food can definitely be delicious! The set meals are actually a great way to have at least two servings of vegetables in one meal, which I highly encourage my clients to do.

And of course, Arla and Cocio beverages are also served at the station. I loved the Cocio dark chocolate milk with the set meal.

If I go back, I think I’d create my own set, having the Brown Rice and Caramelized Mushroom Soup, Greek Salad and Corned Beef Panini.

The Babe with Marco Lobregat of Geiser Maclang
Thank you so much, Marco and Arla for having me at the launch of the pop-up station! And for this haul of Arla goodness to bring home! :)

Do yourself some good. Drop by the Arla Goodness Station when you’re at SM Aura to fuel up on goodness! They’re only available until February!

The Choice Awards 2016: Manila's Voice for Best Restaurants and Food

Life has been an adventurous blur the past few months, having had just two weeks to pack up and leave my whole life in Cebu for a whole new journey ahead of me in Manila.

So, it’s been more than two months since I started living here and I’ve slowly settled in. Although I’m homesick already, there are several things I’m glad about being here. First of all, continuing education for my profession is now more accessible since most of the seminars and conventions happen here. So, I get to save on airfare since I’m here now! On the other hand, Manila is a top food destination in the country, with new restaurants popping up seemingly every day.

With all the restaurants around though, how do we know which ones to put on top of our list?

Well, who better to ask than only the best food bloggers in the country? What are food bloggers for, right? But, the food bloggers are no snobs. They are also curious about the crowd favorites. And thus, The Choice Awards was born!

The top food blogger of the Philippines, Anton Diaz of Our Awesome Planet, along with the World Food Expo (WOFEX) and the blogger collective known as The KTG (Kain Tulog Gang) have joined forces to so aptly create this one and only people’s choice awards for their favorite food, restaurants, bars and more—or simply, The Choice.

Ippudo's Hakata-Style Nikusoba Ramen

Ramen has been taking over the food scene both in Manila and Cebu since 2014 and it hasn’t seemed to slow down at all. More ramen restaurants keep popping up and people are learning that this isn’t your ordinary noodle soup.

We know that Japanese cuisine is among the superior cuisines in Asia and that’s because they take their food very seriously. Every dish is an art—ramen being no less, such that ramen chefs have their own distinct titles. They have made ramen a spectacle to behold, a dish worth anticipating. Every step of the preparation and service is done with utmost accuracy, every detail given full attention.

Honestly, I initially had a premature disinterest in ramen because I thought the broth was too complex and rich. And, my first taste of ramen in one of the first ramen houses in Cebu did not help at all because that supposed highly recommended ramen house had just changed management then so the quality wasn’t the same. But, of course, I’ve tasted better ramen since and found myself onboard the ramen rave bandwagon—none other than ramen itself turned me into a convert. I like to call myself a… ramen ranger! Whenever I head to a ramen house, I can’t help chanting, “Go, go, ramen rangers!” Lol. Sorry for the millenials who can’t relate.

Anyway, so now I’m based in Manila (I just moved here two weeks ago) and this ramen ranger has yet to explore the best ramen around. Fortunately, I was invited by Ippudo—a ramen restaurant under the Standard Hospitality Group, the same company that introduced the epic Yabu House of Katsu (just my only favorite breaded porkchop, ever!)—to taste their newly launched ramen and I just couldn’t resist. I was invited to their newest branch, at Uptown Mall in BGC. Perfect, because my office is at BGC, too.

As if having ramen for dinner after a busy day at work wasn’t perfect enough, the weather seemed almost orchestrated to set the mood even more. And best of all, it was a holiday the next day! Ha!

Everything about Ippudo was a set-up for a great ramen night. Like most ramen restaurants, I was greeted in Japanese as I entered and the servers barking Japanese greetings throughout the night transformed the atmosphere into a serious ramen realm. But, something distinct about Ippudo is the impeccable service that ensures your meal is always served promptly and precisely—a trademark of The Standard Hospitality Group. The entire meal was seamless. In fact, it seemed to go by so fast that I barely noticed I was able to devour my bowl... and a Wagyu Maki Onigiri! Oops! Superpower unleashed.

The Wholesome Market: Cebu's First Healthy Lifestyle Market

Cebu has been brimming with food markets lately but there's one that seeks to make a difference and which I hope would ripple in waves towards an active movement that cultivates a healthy environment and lifestyle in Cebu.

The Wholesome Market is Cebu's first premier healthy lifestyle fair organized by Modus Vivendi Events in partnership with Robinson’s Galleria Cebu. It aims to support local and home-based entrepreneurs who provide wholesome, organic, and sustainable solutions to the needs of your body inside and out.

With fifteen hand-picked vendors advocating for healthy living, The Wholesome Market is a well-curated lifestyle fair that features vendors who bring something new to the table and are passionate in creating food and beverages for the soundness of soul, body and mind.

Cebu in the Bag Celebrity + Bloggers Food and Fashion Bazaar

Hear, hear, dear readers! For those in Cebu, the biggest sale of the year is happening on June 13-15 (Friday to Sunday) at three venues - Ayala Center Cebu, Parkmall, and The Outlets at Pueblo Verde - in commemoration of Cebu Business Month. I have to say the most exciting one is at The Outlets at Pueblo Verde where there will be a Celebrity + Bloggers Food and Fashion Bazaar from 4:00-10:00 p.m, the first of its kind in Cebu!

Of course, I'm going to be there to sell my Team Brownie goodies. I'd really appreciate it if you come over and try some of my warm brownie cups. This is a chance for us bloggers to meet our readers and you can bring home some souvenirs from us, too. This big event will be attended by celebrities such as beauty queens and Manila's top bloggers - Kryz Uy, Lissa Kahayon, Camille Co, and David Guison - aside from Cebu's very own bloggers who will be selling their own products and merchandise.

Team Brownie and more of the interesting new food to check out will be there. Some of these are only around during bazaars like these too so don't miss it!

If you don't know where The Outlets is or find it quite a distance from where you are, no worries! FREE shuttle rides to and from Ayala Center Cebu and SM City Cebu are available for you to drop any excuse for not being there. Just refer to the poster below for the schedules.

BPI card holders are given special privileges of getting in the bazaar for FREE during the first hour which is 4:00-5:00 p.m. to get the first glimpse of what's in store. All you need to do is present your card! The first 100 shoppers each day also get a free bag.

For non-BPI cardholders, you can get the chance to MEET & GREET the celebrity bloggers for only a minimum purchase of P500 at the Bazaar or P1,500 from any of the stores at The Outlets.

You've got nothing to lose for dropping by really. Feast your eyes and taste buds on all the beautiful people who will be there, and the food and clothes that the bloggers will be selling! So, I hope to see you there! Save the dates! ;)

When Food and Fashion Meet 1: Shop. Eat. Play

Hello hello, dear readers!

I know I've been saying it over and over but I really am and have been so excited about this! And I hope you are, too! If not, I'm sure you will be at the end of this post. ;)

First of all, let me refresh you on what this little project of ours (with THE Issa Perez) is:

Two enthusiastic ladies exploring the best city in the world, Cebu, on a
quest to uncover the best places to shop, dine and lounge around.
From hole-in-the-walls, downtown best-kept secrets,
to fancy date spots and splurge sprees -- we’ll be on it!

What do you think, eh? Issa Perez has been one of my dearest friends for 6 years now and we've managed to keep in touch and catch up with each other from time to time despite our different lifestyles. She's a dynamic fashion blogger and one thing we both have in common with our blogs is that we cover "Cebu Secrets" in our respective niches -- fashion and food. This detail brought us to the concept of doing a collab for this blog series we named "When Food and Fashion Meet" to offer our readers convenience and something interesting to look forward to on our blogs.

So one afternoon, we took to the streets, walking and commuting in jeepneys, to the Cebu Secret destinations. First, to...

Cebu Handicrafts Vendors Association
North Reclamation, across SM North Wing parking lot

How to get here by jeep:
(from downtown) 01K
(from Ayala or Lahug) 04L

I've noticed this place whenever I pass by North Reclamation going to SM and I also read about it on Issa's blog before. It may just look like a couple of yellow shabby shacks across the North Wing parking lot of SM but it's a haven for tourists looking to buy some local or native accessories as souvenirs and gifts to friends. Issa and I made a mission to buy our own souvenir to remember the first day of our collab -- friendship bracelets!

All the items sold here are HANDMADE and of export quality yet unbelievably low-priced! You can buy beads here and create your own accessories, too. The things you find here are so much more expensive in the malls and souvenir shops.

Mission accomplished!
bracelets @ P10 each!
like grade school best friends :))

I'll leave it to the fashion blogger to expound more on what you can get here. :))
After that little ocular of the pretty handicrafts, we then headed off to...

The Chillage
G/F Adnama Bldg, Larrazabal Ave., North Reclamation, 6014 Cebu City

tumblr:       thechillage

How to get here by jeep:
(from downtown) 01K
(from Ayala) 03Q to SM, get down at Sun Gold and take a 01K to Cebu Doctor's University

I've been so curious about The Chillage since I've seen photos of it on instagram by fellow bloggers and I also visited the stall during Sinulog Blastoff. Issa and I had to WALK around the whole block of Cebu Doctor's University (CDU) before we found the entrance to Adnama bldg where The Chillage is. The entrance was enchanting in itself.

A rush of excitement filled me when we got there. I couldn't wait to get inside!

first view as you enter -- the radiant cafe

Issa and I felt like Alice in Wonderland, finding ourselves in a different world, completely cluttered with quirky things that made our heads spin in amusement and euphoria. We couldn't stop gushing over the things in the shop and the modern details of the interior.

The concept of The Chillage is, it's a retail store on the front part, a cafe as you go deeper, and a place to "chill" in their own little fun room.  It's a totally wholesome environment, suitable for family, friends, lovers and artists! Their tagline is Shop.Eat.Play. Thus, the title of our first post for our series since it's exactly what we did.

The Chillage offers exclusively local products from Manila and Cebu; from accessories, to clothing, to toiletries and what nots. It makes you appreciate local products at a whole new level.

Lookie what we found!

They even have free candy. And they taste good! :D

I have to mention, I'm a fan of pretty restrooms, and so far, this is THE best in town, hands down! Talk about finding a couch right inside the restroom for your girlfriends to hang out and share beauty secrets while doing each other's make up. :D

I was just as excited to try the food as much as I was excited about the shop. The menu surprised me by how affordable it is! Everything's less than P200! They have pasta, sandwiches, salad, chips&dips and dessert. I guess they're really catering to the students of the neighboring university.

Theo & Philo chocolates from Manila! Dubbed as the best by Spot.ph

We got their Taparoni (their version of beef tapa and macaroni) and Spinach Dip. Both had generous servings and reasonable prices! It was then that I fell hard for the place. It was so impressive to find that they did not use just ground beef. Now that's an HONEST menu; a rare find these days.

Taparoni  P130
Spinach and Cream Cheese Chips & Dip  P90
I'm in love :)

The Fun Room
- the epitome of chill

What a day! I fell more in love with Cebu because of The Chillage and since I love it so much, I'll be making a separate post about it. This post is getting so long. Haha.

So, that was it. Hope you guys enjoyed it as much as we did! Next post for the series will be out next month, March 2.

Please visit Issa's blog for her take on that fun-filled day. :D
