Little Saigon Big Bangkok for the Northern Folks

Sometimes, we don't just go to restaurants for good food. Sometimes, it's for the experience. One of the restaurants on top of my list -- Little Saigon Big Bangkok -- happens to have both. Whenever someone asks me for resto recommendations, this resto would most likely be the first I'd mention (with a dreamy expression) along with raves of my favorite dishes from them -- Phad Thai and Banh Xeo.

I've already featured them here on the blog before. Their maiden branch was situated in a cozy nook at Guadalupe (told ya 'there must be something about Guada soil') and now, they finally moved to 1 Paseo Saturnina, Maria Luisa Rd., Banilad (beside The Spa at Cebu) for the northern patrons!

I was invited to their opening night last month. Of course, I was excited to first see the setting. They had both an indoor and outdoor dining area, furbished in consistency with their first branch's ambience. I stayed indoors where it portrays a simple yet sophisticated restaurant atmosphere. If you wish to feel like you're eating Thai-Viet street food, by all means go for the outdoor dining area. ;)

There was a mini bar where I stayed and I was personally accommodated by the owner, Mr. Mark Almadrones, that friendly guy who always gladly explains the menu to their customers. For this special night, I wanted to try whatever was new on the menu.

There was a blackboard scribbled with 'Specials' to choose from at the top of the wall across my table. I decided to go for some of the specials -- Cha Gio, Thai Shimi, Viet Fish -- and some of their regular items I've been meaning to try as well -- Smoked Pork Banh Mi and Goi Con. Okay, I didn't eat these alone. I brought my favorite 'foobu' (food buddy) for reinforcement.

New staff took our orders and they were fluently knowledgeable about the menu which is something a lot of restaurants actually fail to do. Service was fast and every dish was exciting. I realized along the course that Thai and Vietnamese cuisine are actually acquired tastes because there were particular flavors that were new to me and strange enough for me to maybe try them another time to see if I'd like them. This is when I can say experience is one of the best assets this restaurant offers.

There were a myriad of sauces, each unique in flavor, that married perfectly with the food and I believe the attention in every little detail is a signature of this resto. It's just mind blowing how every little piece of the dish has a significant role in every bite when they are assembled on the cutlery. Okay, let's get on it..

First came the Goi Con (Vietnamese fresh spring rolls) and Cha Gio (fried spring rolls). These are regulars on the menu but it was my first time to try them. These are P50 apiece and I've read on zerothreetwo.com that Goi Con is one of their favorite snacks at LSBB. I definitely enjoyed both which came with their own complementing sauces. I would mostly prefer the fresh one though the fried counterpart is not half bad at all. This is a great appetizer staple for every visit here.

Goi Con  P50/pc

The next dish was the Thai Shimi. This is their version of Japanese tuna sashimi.  The tuna is set on a leaf and topped with a slice of garlic and chili. So, how do you eat this thing? You wrap the tuna sashimi with the leaf and pop the whole thing in your mouth to get the complete experience. I personally do not like leaves with fine hair (you know what I mean?) so I wasn't too fond of it. It was worth the experience though. :D

Here are the different sauces that came with our first three dishes. THe most interesting one for me was the tamarind sauce. It was sweet and tangy. But my favorite sauce is the subtly spicy sweet vinegar-based sauce for the Goi Con. All these sauces are made from scratch!

For our main course, we had Viet Fish. It was served on a sizzling plate and my first impression was that it was a heap! It was probably good for three to four persons. The fish looked like it was stranded in a forest of greenery but it was divinely crisp and had an interesting flavor from the medley of spices it was doused with. It also remained crisp to the end of our meal!

The Smoked Pork Banh Mi then followed, a dish I've been hearing a lot about so I was curiously anticipating to meet this fellow. It was a fat ass sandwich, jampacked with  painstakingly smoked pork shreds smothered in sauce. This one's definitely for the glutton. I loved the smokiness of the pork, the thick, sweet sauce imbued in it, and most of all the kick of freshness from the coriander and cucumbers. Ooh la la.

After all that food, which was way too much for just two people by the way, Mr. Mark dropped by and offered us dessert. He recommended their homemade kaffir lime mango ice cream with a waffle. I didn't fancy the waffle much but the ice cream was definitely unique. Fresh mango cubes were abundant and the texture was smooth and creamy with a hint of Thai mint. One thing's for sure, it's not your typical sweet ice cream. ;)

Once you have a taste of LSBB, you'll be reminiscing and dreaming about it. And more unconsciously than not, you'll find yourself back there. I personally find it hard to choose just enough dishes for either my budget or my company because most of their dishes are really good. When budget dictates, my default order would most likely be their Phad Thai, Banh Xeo and Goi Con. :D

It's quite pricey for a solo diner or even two people, so it's best to eat here with the family. But trust me, you gotta try this place at least once. :)

Siam -- Sophisticated Authentic Thai Cuisine

Thai cuisine is one of the cuisines that is friendly to the Pinoy palate because it touches quite close to homebase with infusions of lemongrass and dishes that match perfectly with white rice.

Siam is the only authentic Thai resto in Ayala and has been awarded the "Most Promising Retailer Award" by Ayala Malls. It's authenticity is assured by their Thai Select award from the Thai ministry of commerce. It is a sister company of Krua Thai, Blue Elephant and Golden Spoon Catering.

Siam has been around since the early years of The Terraces at Ayala. The first impression I had of the resto was the modern interior -- high back couches and indirect lighting from the wall above the head of the chair.

Of the few times I've dined there, the only unique dish I fondly remember is the Chicken and Mango which is not available in the menu anymore. Fortunately, I was invited to the launching of their new dishes. I was so excited because Thai cuisine is one of my favorite cuisines and I also needed to be reacquainted with the menu here.

We were welcomed with a Calamansi Soda that was truly refreshing. We were also warned that there was going to be a lot of dishes so we should save some belly space for each one. The refreshment for the meal was their homemade fresh four seasons juice. I love fresh juice! :D

Four seasons juice, Calamansi Soda

THE NEW DISHES:

-- APPETIZERS --

Spicy Glazed Chicken Wings

Thai Fish Cakes
-- simple but well prepared; it's not the typical kick of lemongrass but it's a balanced medley of spices and herbs that make this dish uniquely flavorful without overpowering the fish as the main act

Crispy Noodles with Mango Salad

Spicy Thai Beef Salad

Tom Yum Soup
It's not new to the menu but this indispensable Thai soup was served to refresh and prep our palate for the main course.

-- MAIN COURSE --

Siam String Beans in Red Curry

Green Curry Fried Rice with Chicken

Grilled Premium Ribs in Herb and Honey Sauce

Pineapple Fried Rice

Bangkok Express
Siam's Thai version of the local Bicol Express -- rich and creamy yet balanced; the string beans were still crisp.

Seafood and Vegetables Medley in Taro Nest

Chili Crab (THE BEST!)
THE STAR OF THE MEAL. This blew me away! Tender, succulent meat, evidently very fresh and steamed to perfection. They also have a curry version of this but I still go for the chili crab! Guaranteed fresh from Zamboanga, delivered live to the kitchen.

Boy, was that a feast! From the new additions to the menu, my picks would be the Thai fish cakes, Spicy Beef Salad, Grilled Premium Ribs and of course, the Chili Crab! The extensive menu of Siam offers dishes that could please even the most discriminating palate. Vegetarians are very much welcome here as well, as they offer a considerably wide and tasty selection for them.

And yes, I was invigorated by the flavors and the precise execution of the dishes. The service here is also that of fine dining where the course of the meals are served in the right order and not altogether. Since Siam offers authentic Thai cuisine, that means they have a Thai chef heading the kitchen and all their ingredients are imported from Thailand. For the price of the dishes, sophisticated ambience, quality dishes and excellent service, you are guaranteed value for your money. This is THE destination for sophisticated Thai dining.

Cebu Secret Chows: Little Saigon Big Bangkok

Thai cuisine is one of my most favorite Asian cuisines. I love the distinct aroma and flavor from the medley of lemongrass, fresh coriander, Thai basil, coconut milk, hint of fish sauce and a bit of spice from dried chili. It's just so interestingly flavorful and aromatic. It never fails to seduce me. I consider it a pretty healthy cuisine as well. I love how they incorporate a lot of fresh vegetables into their dishes and the mildness of their curry compared to Indian curry.

I've gotten a recommendation from a reader to try this new Thai-Vietnamese home resto in Guadalupe, right behind the barangay hall. Since I've heard of it, I've been dying to visit the place to have my fill. I just had this feeling it had to be really good, from the name itself -- Little Saigon Big Bangkok.

So finally, I headed there for lunch with Luis. My, was I in for a treat...

There was a garden setting with comfy outdoor funiture and where the cooking is done in an open hut like an actual street food setting except you sit and wait for your food to be served fresh. I can imagine it to be more romantic during dinner. They also had indoor dining inside the house.

The menu was easy to choose from and had everything you'd want -- fish, pork, beef and chicken. They use parrot fish for their fish dishes. That's a plus! Cream dory, be gone! :))

We ordered the Banh Xeo, Hanoi grilled pork and Pad Thai. I just had to try the Pad Thai.

Service was swift and none of the dishes were a disappointment. It was evident that even the little details that mattered in the composition of the dish were well attended to. In short, everything was made with LOVE.

The Pad Thai came first and it was an explosion of flavors in the mouth. Every Asian country has a noodle representative and for Thailand, this is it. I consider this the pancit canton of Thailand. The rice noodles were cooked to perfection with an excellent sauce and mixed with well seasoned shrimps.

Pad Thai - P250
The Banh Xeo was the most interesting one because we didn't exactly know what to expect and the play of textures was amazing.

Banh Xeo - P200

It's a crepe made with turmeric and coconut milk, filled with shrimps, fresh beansprouts, and vegetables. Lettuce and fresh coriander came along as sidings and a sweet vinegar sauce with cucumber. The crepe wrapper was amazingly crisp yet light and had a faint sweetness from the coconut milk. It didn't easily become soggy even with the filling and sauce; an indication that it had the perfect thickness.

Then, the Hanoi grilled pork. I was expecting thick, grilled pieces of pork but what came was sukiyaki style sliced pieces that were marinated and tender. The grilled vegetables (eggplant, green beans and tomato) alongside were a perfect match and were a savory delight. They were grilled to perfection and melted in the mouth. The sauce was a mild spicy, salty and tangy sauce. Again, another winner.

So all the dishes that we had were amazing and the owners, a young couple, were very welcoming to the guests. The wife and head chef, who studied in Le Cordon Bleu Bangkok even served one of the dishes, and the husband chatted up a bit about the food.

The prices may be a bit intimidating but the servings here are good for 2-3 persons and the flavors and quality do not disappoint at all. I wish I could go back more often. That Pad Thai and coconut crepe killed me right there. I'm lovestruck by this resto.
