Dong Juan: A Piece of Cebu in Quezon City, Manila

Hello, dear readers!

How have you been? I know I've been dormant on the blog for so long now. Do forgive me, I've been very occupied with school and Team Brownie. I'm on my final year in university so please bear with me. I hope you'd still look forward to my posts though they will be coming so rarely now. I'll still try to catch up on what I've been wanting to share with you guys. As much as I miss blogging, I am trying my best to excel in and not neglect my academics while juggling my little business on the other hand as well. I'll need all the encouragement and support I can get, so praying for me would be very much appreciated. For after all, none of my accomplishments are of my own strength alone. :)

Anyway, here's a post about one of my favorite Cebu restaurants opening their doors in Manila… Read up and enjoy!

===============================

If I'm not mistaken, Dong Juan, a Cebu home-grown restaurant, is one of the most featured restaurants in my blog. I think I have at least three posts about them (I even joined a chili burger eating challenge they once had) and I think that says a lot. I've mentioned before that Dong Juan and I go a long way back. It all started with that first bite of their burger three years ago that was probably the consummation of my "meat-lovingness". It was also one of the first few restaurants I wrote about on this blog.

Needless to say, I have always believed in this restaurant's potential. In its two years of commercially breaking through the Cebu food scene, Dong Juan persists to break boundaries beyond Cebu. Besides the growing empire they've built in Cebu (more or less 10 branches), they also have branches in Bohol, Cagayan, Davao, Pampanga, and most recently, Quezon City in Metro Manila!

Dong Juan in Mother Ignacia, Quezon City is probably their most beautiful branch to date. It is set in an ancestral house, owned by Severino Reyes -  a Filipino playwright  more popularly known by his pen name "Lola Basyang"- across St. Mary's College. You can't miss it!

Severino Reyes' painted portrait in the new Dong Juan branch

I had the special privilege of being invited to their grand opening at the end of July with my entire trip sponsored by the generous hosts, Mr. Barney and Mrs. Aubrey Borja. I was flown in to Manila on a Friday morning and was accommodated in Tune Hotels, Quezon City. But before I was dropped off at my hotel, I was brought to Dong Juan for lunch.

I was so amazed at how pretty the interiors were, all the while retaining their signature look with decorative blocks, tall coco dividers, and local painter Paul Arenas' lively paintings. I could say it evoked the same simple yet cozy charm of their first branch in Guadalupe, as if one was dining in a friend's home.

This branch had a staircase leading to the second floor where there were several rooms for special occasions or functions such as business meetings or intimate birthday celebrations. The entire floor is also available for exclusive bookings.

They also have a cute little spot under the staircase if you feel like getting a bit more privacy. Since this branch is snuggly situated within the vicinity of the country's top TV networks, ABS-CBN and GMA, expect to find local celebrities dining here. And I bet this would be a favorite spot in the house.

For lunch, I ordered their Popeye Shrimps, Fish n Chips, and a Cheeseburger. Oops, excuse the gluttony. If you dine with me, you'll get used to it. I just like variety in my meals. ;)

There was not a trace of disappointment as all the dishes were just as good as their original branch! Well done, Dong Juan! Keep this up and the whole neighborhood will be scurrying to your doorstep again and again.

The grand opening was to be in the evening so I headed to the hotel to rest from my early flight that day and freshen up for that night's affair. I was excited and curious to see which celebrities would show up. I was betting on Martin Nievera to be there because I remembered Dong Juan's post on Facebook, showing pictures of him dining in the Persimmon branch in Cebu and even going back the next day because he loved it.

When I arrived at the event, I was brought to the second floor where most of the celebrities were seated. True enough, the first person I spotted was Martin Nievera! He was very jolly, friendly, and talkative - the life of the party. We were introduced and chatted a bit along with his friends. It was to be a festive night - unlimited burger steaks, chili wings and crispy pata, and not to mention, the spontaneous crooning of the guest entertainers in the likes of Martin Nievera, Luke Mejares, and Jimmy Bondoc.

Of course, I had to have photos with some of the celebrities I spotted:

Dong Juan Mug Cake
Dong Juan's Manila settlement looks promising and definitely something Cebu should be proud of. Expect to find familiar Dong Juan menu staples such as their burgers, pizza, and pasta. They also have a new addition to their dessert menu - mug cake which comes in 5 flavors: Dark Fudge, Red Velvet, Salted Caramel, and Speculoos Cruncy Cookie Butter. It's quickly becoming a favorite by many and I really recommend you try it. Other dishes I'd recommend are their Gambas al Ajillo pasta (a personal favorite), Onion Rings, Pork Sisig, and Sizzling Pochero. So, I'm inviting everyone in Metro Manila to drop by Dong Juan and have a taste of one of Cebu's most innovative restaurants. :)

Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Borja! Keep soaring and more power to you!

Pizza Republic Pick + Mix by Giuseppe Genco

Buckle up, Cebu! Something very exciting is about to open its doors very very soon! Like, TOMORROW soon!

I was privileged to be invited to the dry run of a restaurant that's the first of its kind in Cebu two weeks ago. I've noticed this development in Lahug beside Chikaan during the recent months and I forecasted that it may be a spin-off of Project Pie in Manila. Since I saw this before my Manila trip (which I'll be telling you about soon!) earlier this month, I was hoping to go check out Project Pie so I can compare it. But upon hearing of the lack of customer care and considering the innumerable choices for my restaurant marathon, I was convinced to leave this for the next trip instead.

Giuseppe is reputed to make the best pizza in town. Even celebrity Chef Gene Gonzalez has this on his list as one of the best restaurants in Cebu. Pizza Republic Pick + Mix by Giuseppe Genco is a fast casual restaurant that offers quality Italian pizza cooked in a wood-fired brick oven at a very reasonable price. Keywords there are quality, Italian, and reasonably priced!

The Pizza of My Childhood

I fondly remember Greenwich as the first pizza that caught my heart during my childhood because Dad loved it. I think it was the precursor for my preference for thin crust pizza. The first flavor I loved was Hawaiian (ham, pineapple and cheese). :D

Last month, Doyzkie of iluvcebu.com and doyzkie.com invited me to dinner at Greenwich along with his brothers Edd and Reymond, and the perky Angeli of foodiecraft.com. Every meal with this bunch is always an eating spree.

It's been a while since I've had some Greenwich so I was excited about this dinner. We had the Greenwich Special Overload Pizza which is probably the dream pizza of typical Filipinos. It had everything you could imagine on a pizza, from vegetables to meat, like it was a combination of all the pizza varieties offered in Greenwich. This fastfood is radical with their crust because they make it fresh, being crisp on the outside and soft and chewy inside. Mmm. Each bite was nostalgic of my childhood days.

Can I be the next Anne Curtis? :p

A new addition to the menu was the notorious Crispy Glazed Chicken that I've noticed people raving about lately on Twitter. We had to try this. The skin was crisp even with the sweet and mildly spicy glaze that could make you order an extra rice with the meal. Barging through that tasty protective covering with my first bite, I discovered a juicy and distinctly marinated flesh. This was certainly a different fried chicken I've ever tasted and one of those kinds that get you craving.

Crispy Glazed Chicken meal   P79

You could have a barkada bucket for yourself if you're that hungry (why not?) or share it with your friends and family if you want an affordable tasty meal. ;)

The tall box of crispy, lightly flavored crinkle fries could be a perfect sidekick to your Crispy Glazed Chicken meal, too. It comes with a tangy salsa-like sauce. :D

After every meal, I always gotta finish on a sweet note -- dessert! We had frozen delights in cookies and cream and caramel. :D

Having devoured all that, we earned our citizenship to Greenwich's discount card! The Utimate Green Card is your access to overloaded rewards! You can get this for only P199 and this entitles you to benefits like:

  • 10% discount for dine-in and take-out orders
  • Buy 1 Take 1 pizza
When you order a 12" Barkada  Size or 15" Party Size pizza with a 1.5 Liter Coke
  • exclusive treats
Enjoy as much as P1,000 discount on Barkada Treat coupons

officially a greencard holder! :D

With the green card, I can have as much pizza and crispy chicken I want, anywhere, anytime. Awesome! :D

Cebu Secret Chows: Fr. Landz Pizza

Back when I lived in Guadalupe, studied culinary in ICAAC and when pizza was the food trend, I read of this little pizza resto on Sunstar (by Luis, when we weren't acquainted yet) and frequently passed by it on my way to school but I never considered checking it out for no particular reason.

Now that I've transferred residence, go to school in USC (I have subjects in all campuses. Insane right?) and have this blog, Luis suggested to have lunch at Fr. Landz one day. My curiosity was finally awakened.

As I entered, I was greeted by a tiny pizza cafe that seats approximately 20 people and was like a little replica of Sbarro because they had a counter where slices of pizza were displayed to be ordered individually. The staff were courteous and wifi is available here. It is located along Englis, V. Rama and does not have properly allocated parking space so it is more ideal for take out and delivery.

Hawaiian P47, Supreme P50

The menu was simple: pizza, 2 choices of pasta, baked chicken wings and some a la carte meals. Pizza is served whole or by slice, the baked chicken wings came in a variety of flavors as meals or by the dozen, and the pasta is served with a garlic twist on the side and offered with the choice of the 3 usual sauces: tomato, carbonara and meat.

BAKED? This caught my eye. Baked dishes other than pizza and lasagna are rare in resto's and since I love chicken, I had to try this.

We ordered the Fr Landz Crisp and Baked Penne Pasta on Ricotta in Tomato Sauce. And since blue is my favorite color, I got a Blue Raspberry Lemonade. I would just have the pizza on my next visit.

the babe loves BLUE!

The pasta looked really good and when I took my first bite, I was surprised by how good it was. I can say it's even better than Sbarro. The pasta was al dente and had enough sauce so it wasn't dry. The ricotta cheese made this a winner. It was the charm of this dish. The serving is good for 1-2 persons.

It also came with a garlic twist which impressed me. Again, I like it better than Sbarro because it's way less greasy. It's chewy on the inside and crisp on the outside. You can order it for just P12.

The Fr Landz Crisp Baked Chicken was alright. I liked that it had a lavishly spiced crisp exterior though it was not as juicy as I wished it as.

Fr Landz proved to be a pleasant surprise and I left with a satisfied palate and tummy. The prices are reasonable and it's a comfy place to dine in. I would definitely go back for the garlic twist and the pasta.

Blue Raspberry Lemonade - P47

Cebu Secret Chows: Happy Rooster and Fudge

T'was to be a special night... And a special night indeed. The babe was on a dinner date and the lucky man (hahaha) offered a choice of steak or Sumo Sam. I asked where the steak was and since it was Carlito's Way, I chose this because it's on my Cebu Secret Chows list. The man knows where to take me. ;)

Carlito's Way is at Persimmon, Mabolo. When we arrived at Persimmon, we noticed a cute home decor shop and as we looked closer, it was also a cafe! As much as I wanted to try the steak at Carlito's (Sorry, I shall visit you some other time. Promise!), this was too intriguing to pass up on. So, we entered it and it was  just enchanting. Such a unique concept! The tiny kitchen was the first thing we noticed - studio type, like more open than an open kitchen (gasp!). I was squealing with delight at everything I saw. It was reminiscent of Simply J's but with a different vibe. It was more intimate considering it could only accommodate less than 15 people.
The menu selections were very limited though everything was interesting and priced very reasonably. They offered appetizers, sandwiches, pasta and Handuraw pizza. I also noticed that the menu was of healthier components than most other menus. Like, they used whole wheat pita for sandwiches and whole wheat pasta. The appetizers were all calling to my taste buds but we chose to have Tomato and Basil pasta and Pizza Cebuana (like we're carbo loading for a marathon). For our beverage, Luis had Coke (pffft. that's him) and I had their Happy Rooster Fruit Punch.

We were encouraged to explore the shop while awaiting our food. And we gladly did. So, basically, everything in the shop was for sale and it was well displayed. There was a queen size bed (which would have been nice to eat on a la dinner in bed. hahaha.), books organized on shelves set up like a library, and anything else you would most likely wanna have in your home. They even had artificial food and drinks made of rubber/plastic on the tables! They seriously looked so realistic, I was nearly fooled! Haha.
bottomless drink... cuz it never runs out! :))
bottoms up! :D
real or not? :))
feeling at home :D
the library

dinner in bed? Haha.
our table
the chef/owner cooking our food
Our food was served after 20 mins. which is not bad at all considering the size of the kitchen and the volume of customers (We were the only customers for the night.). I found out that the owner was the chef and that she also came from the culinary school I went to - International Culinary Arts Academy Cebu (ICAAC).

Tomato Basil Pasta    P 120
olive oil, whole wheat spaghetti, fresh tomatoes, fresh basil, slice whole wheat pita
My first time to have whole wheat pasta in a resto. :D
The serving was satisfactory for the price though we found it pretty bland so we asked for parmesan cheese. But still not bad. I liked that it was  served with a slice of whole wheat pita on the side. It was also perfectly al dente. I've tasted something similar at Cafe Elysa though and I can still say Cafe Elysa's was better. There's something about those fresh tomatoes that seduce my palette. But for healthier pasta, I'd definitely come here.
hot sauce, chili flakes, parmesan cheese :D
Pizza Cebuana     P 389 (not sure, forgot to take note of the price of this)
Chorizo de Cebu, house blend tomato sauce, kesong puti, mozarella, herbs, dash of cayenne pepper
This was reeeaallyy good. I love kesong puti (white cheese)! And cayenne pepper! The sweetness of the chorizo melded perfectly with the mild heat. It's a thin crust pizza and was crisp and chewy. This was good for 3-4 people. Or 2 if you're guys. :D

Happy Rooster Fruit Punch      P 40
sweet mango, green tea, basil, lemon slices
I loved this drink! It was so refreshing and tickled my palette with satisfaction. Perfect drink for me. I wouldn't mind having this every day! :D

The service was good. The waitress was more than willing to answer any queries (and we had a lot, interesting the place was) we had. We definitely enjoyed the food, ambience and service. And the best part was, it was all spontaneous! This place was just full of pleasant surprises. Even the service water was cucumber-infused! How unique and refreshing!

We moved on to Fudge for dessert. I've been hearing about this little pastry shop cafe since last year but never got the chance to visit it for fear that it might be beyond my budget. Luis knew which places on my list I still didn't get to visit and I really appreciate that he refers to it (my list). It wasn't his first time here.

We ordered their specialty - chocolate lava cakes @ P 120, which required 25 mins. to be served. It was quite inconvenient though because as our orders were served, they were about to close so we were rushed to consume our sweets.

With the circumstance, I didn't get to enjoy my dessert so much. I wasn't even able to finish it with the given time because it was so rich. But it was really good; the best lava cake aside from hotels (because the best I've tasted so far was from Blu Bar at Marco Polo Hotel). It had that trademark marriage of heat from the cake and coolness from the ice cream with a rich chocolate fudge sauce. Oh, so lustful. Definitely one to go back for. They also serve Filipino-Mediterranean/Western fusion sandwiches, pasta and main courses. I'm intrigued by their aligue pasta and cheesy clubhouse sandwich. I hope to go back and try these sometime.
